Photo of a landspout tornado near Serena, IL. You can find a little more about landspout tornadoes here. Three brief landspout tornadoes also developed (one near Serena in LaSalle County, IL and two near Grant Park in Kankakee County, IL) as intense thunderstorms interacted with a boundary of converging air near ground level. This came just six days after a dust storm caused a significant and fatal pile-up on I-55 in central Illinois. ![]() Multiple reports of near-zero visibility resulted in the issuance of two Dust Storm Warnings, the first such warnings issued by our office. An outflow boundary and associated strong winds caused by a separate cluster of severe thunderstorms moving in from the west kicked up significant amounts of blowing dust across parts of southern LaSalle County and towards the I-55 corridor in Livingston County. This resulted in a localized axis of very heavy rainfall where 2 to 5 inches of rain were observed, causing localized flash flooding. Additionally, storms aligned in a northwest-to-southeast oriented axis and repeatedly developed over the same locations for several hours. These storms quickly became severe, producing both damaging wind gusts and large hail (golf ball sized hail was observed near Lake Village, IN and also near Lisbon, IL).Showers and thunderstorms developed along a nearly stationary boundary draped from near Amboy, IL to just north of Rensselaer, IN late in the afternoon on Sunday, May 7th.
